The Symptoms of an Erupting Wisdom Tooth

Having dental pain sometimes results in repetitive headaches, and if the pain is due to the appearance of wisdom teeth, then it is important to identify the various symptoms in order to intervene as quickly as possible.

The wisdom teeth are the last teeth situated completely at the back of the mouth. They are in fact the 3rd molars (top and bottom). They usually appear towards the end of adolescence or at the beginning of adulthood.

When there is enough space in the mouth it is painless when they finally come in but this is not the case for everyone. Most young adults suffer from severe pain and/or hypersensitivity. When they come in along the wrong axis, they can cause severe pain and affect the quality of life of the individual, not to mention the damage they can cause to nearby teeth.

If your jaw is particularly narrow and you think you may be likely to get wisdom teeth, it is important to consult your dentist and thus avoid:

  • Infections, severe pain, and swelling of the gums
  • Impacted wisdom teeth that could affect nearby (or next to) teeth and gum tissue, and cause long-term pain

Here are some symptoms that can help you identify wisdom teeth coming in so you can avoid this type of pain:

  • What looks like blood in the mouth mixed with saliva (pink saliva)
  • What feels like inflammation at the pericoronary’s level (gums that totally or partially covers the wisdom tooth) called pericoronitis
  • Gum swelling that prevents you from opening your mouth completely
  • Persistent and unexplained headaches
  • Fever
  • Pain radiating from the jaw
  • Feeling like you have an ear infection
  • Pain that worsens at night, if you have the habit of squeezing your jaw or grinding your teeth
  • A sharp pain at the back of the jaw when chewing gum.

It is important to visit your dental clinic for an X-ray, because if wisdom teeth do not grow properly, they can remain partially embedded into the jawbone and extraction would then be necessary to avoid the risk of infection.

Symptoms of Wisdom Teeth to Treat as an Emergency

  • You’ve been having severe pain in the jaw and/or around the wisdom teeth for several days
  • You notice that pus is forming at the wisdom teeth level, which means that the gum is infected
  • You regularly have bad breath, a possible consequence of food trapped underneath the part of the gum covering the tooth that can lead to infection

Wisdom Teeth Extraction: When is it Necessary?

Only your dentist has the professional abilities to determine the need to extract one or more of your teeth. A consultation and an X-ray are necessary to see if your jaw has enough space to accommodate these new teeth and if you have room, the dentist will also evaluate if they are prone to cavities, and at what stage of growth they are.
