At any time you may encounter a dental emergency outside of the regular open hours of dental offices near you. So it pays to know in advance what you should do if an urgent dental issue arises.
How Do You Know If It’s a Dental Emergency?
It may be a dental emergency if you’re experiencing the following:
- Extreme pain that over-the-counter products can’t relieve
- Continuous bleeding
- Heavy blow or pressure to your teeth, mouth, or jaw
- Swelling in your mouth or face
- Loose or knocked out teeth
A dental emergency can happen at home, work, in school, or during sports events. Dial the emergency line or go to the hospital for immediate medical care.
What to Do During Dental Emergencies
- Toothache can be caused by various factors. If you’re experiencing severe pain in your mouth, this may be due to an infection. Over-the-counter medications may help ease the discomfort. Contact your dentist immediately to identify the actual cause of the pain.
- Chipped or Cracked Tooth. It may not be a dental emergency if the chipped tooth doesn’t hurt. But to be sure, it’s best to book a dental appointment to be seen. If you have chipped a tooth, be careful as you chew to prevent further chipping. If the fracture is severe, apply a cold compress on the side of the cheek to contain swelling. Your dentist will need to take an X-ray of the tooth to verify its condition and recommend the best solution.
- Loose Tooth. While you’re waiting to be seen by the dentist, try to put the tooth back but don’t force it. You can also bite down on the tooth to help keep it in place.
- Knocked Out Tooth. If your tooth has been knocked out, be sure to call for a dental emergency. Be careful in handling the tooth. Don’t touch its roots. If you can’t put the tooth back in place, keep it submerged in a cup of milk.
