It is not uncommon to see patients with gum or maxillary pain. Chances are it is periodontitis. There are treatments to fix this.

What is periodontitis?

The periodontium is the set of tissues that connect the teeth to the jaw. This is what allows us to talk, smile, eat and even seduce others! Periodontitis is a periodontal infection that occurs recurrently and gradually damages the gums and other periodontal tissues. This infection can lead to other problems such as: cardiovascular diseases, pancreatitis, premature births, etc. if it is not treated in time.

What are the symptoms of periodontitis?

  • It presents with signs and symptoms similar to gingivitis;
  • Food impaction between the teeth;
  • Receding gums or teeth mobility;
  • Halitosis (bad breath);
  • Cold sensitivity;
  • Bleeding when brushing teeth;
  • Swelling and redness of gums;
  • Suppuration (Presence of pus during an infection).

People at risk

This infection could affect approximately 80% of the North American population. Among those most at risk we find:

  • People with a family history of periodontitis or a history of painful gingivitis;
  • People who have a low tolerance for stress, infections (eg diabetes) or who have signs and symptoms of depression;
  • Smokers;
  • People who have had very little or no cavities.

Treatment of periodontitis

If you think you may have certain symptoms of periodontitis, it is imperative for you to visit your dentist. He will be able to diagnose the infection through X-rays and microbiological tests. Following the treatment of periodontitis, the dentist will painlessly remove the tartar from your gums, allowing the periodontium to heal better.
