What is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?

Contact us

La Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), also known as biofilm-guided therapy, is a professional oral cleaning protocol for removing harmful dental plaque. (also called biofilm) found on teeth. GBT differs from traditional cleaning methods by using advanced technology that allows for a gentler, more pleasant, and more effective cleaning.

The GBT uses a gentle jet of air, polishing powder and warm water to provide a pleasant cleaning experience for you and your teeth.

What does the GBT consist of?

Developed with detail and care, the Guided Biofilm Therapy protocol consists of eight steps used to achieve a high, consistent and high-quality level of cleaning:

  1. Oral health assessment and diagnosis
  2. Biofilm detection by staining
  3. Raising awareness of good oral hygiene habits
  4. Removal of biofilm, stains and tartar from teeth, gums, palate and tongue using a gentle jet of air, polishing powder and warm water (AIRFLOW® technology)
  5. Deep biofilm removal (under the gum, in deep pockets, furcations and around implants)
  6. Gentle removal of residual limescale (PIEZON PS)
  7. Quality control, fluoride protection (if necessary) and final diagnosis
  8. Scheduling the next appointment

Thanks to these eight therapeutic steps, GBT reduces the use of ultrasound devices and manual instruments that can make cleaning unpleasant. The technology used in the protocol (e.g.: AIRFLOW) is minimally invasive on all types of dental tissue (dentin, cementum, enamel and gum), thus allowing maximum comfort and deep cleaning.

Why is GBT more advantageous?

Unlike other traditional cleaning techniques that have more difficulty removing all dental plaque (also called biofilm) from hard-to-reach areas, GBT is capable of removing 100% of it. biofilm

It is essential to regularly and completely remove the biofilm that accumulates on teeth, gums and other areas of the mouth, as this leads to the following problems:

  • Cavities;
  • Bad breath;
  • Loss of teeth or loss of implants;
  • Gingivitis (bleeding gums);
  • Periodontitis (gingival inflammation/recession, bone loss).

The GBT difference

The GBT protocol complies with recommendations regarding plaque removal by professional mechanical means (Professional Mechanical Plaque Removal or PMPR

Here are some key points that distinguish GBT from other cleaning techniques:

  • Safe for teeth (thanks to the reduced use of manual instruments which are more damaging to teeth);
  • Cleans effectively, quickly and in a minimally invasive way;
  • Allows for precise license plate detection;
  • Removes stains and makes it easier to remove tartar;
  • Prevents and treats gingivitis;
  • Contributes to the treatment of peri-implantitis;
  • Allows for the effective maintenance and cleaning of orthodontic appliances;
  • Preserves exposed dentin to prevent the risk of sensitivity.

Remember that good oral hygiene, combined with regular professional dental care, helps keep biofilm under control and contributes to better overall health.

Who is the GBT for?

General Dentistry

Anyone would benefit from treatment with GBT since it plays an important role in preserving general oral health.

In addition to contributing to the early detection of white spots and cavities, GBT helps to keep biofilm under control and helps prevent periodontal and peri-implant diseases as well as systemic diseases such as respiratory, cardiovascular or diabetes diseases.

Orthodontics

The eight-step GBT approach is ideal for maintaining all types of orthodontic appliances. Because its protocol is gentler than traditional cleaning methods, GBT allows for the complete maintenance of orthodontic appliances while thoroughly cleaning them, thus preventing potential gingivitis or gum recession.

Implantology

The GBT is excellent for implant maintenance since its cleaning techniques using AIRFLOW and PLUS powder are very minimally invasive and suitable for implant surfaces, abutments and all kinds of restorative materials.

GBT is not only essential before implant placement, but also for post-operative maintenance and throughout the life of the implant.

Pediatric dentistry (for children)

Its generally pleasant and gentle process is what greatly distinguishes GBT from other dental cleaning methods. This makes it the ideal treatment for children, who can often be more sensitive to traditional dental tools.

Providing a more than pleasant experience for young patients, GBT allows them to feel confident and thus plan regular care sessions without reluctance or fear on their part.

Overall, the eight steps of GBT help to motivate and encourage oral hygiene in children and are an optimal tool for education, prevention and early detection of caries.

Cosmetic dentistry

Because it is a very minimally invasive method, GBT is ideal for maintaining the integrity of the surfaces of dental veneers, crowns and aesthetic restorations, while ensuring deep cleaning.

The team of EMS Dental recommends the GBT protocol before whitening treatment, restoration placement and impression taking.

Parodontology

The GBT is a key component of periodontal treatments, as it can remove subgingival tartar and tartar from other hard-to-reach areas. Thanks to its unparalleled gentleness, the GBT is ideal for cleaning sensitive areas, ensuring maximum patient comfort.
